What is the Oarfish?
The oarfish (Regalecus glesne) is a long, ribbon-like fish that can grow up to 36 feet in length. It lives in the deep ocean, often at depths of 200 to 1,000 meters. Because of its mysterious nature and rare sightings, it has been the subject of folklore and superstition for centuries.
Why is the Oarfish Called the ‘Doomsday Fish’?
In Japanese folklore, the oarfish is known as Ryūgū-No-Tsukai, meaning “Messenger from the Sea God’s Palace.” This belief dates back to the 17th century. The fish is said to rise to the ocean’s surface before major natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis.
One of the most famous instances of this occurred in 2011 when 20 oarfish washed ashore in Japan months before the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, which claimed over 20,000 lives. Similarly, in August 2024, an oarfish was found in La Jolla Cove, California, just two days before a 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck Los Angeles.
Why Are Oarfish Appearing More Frequently?
There are several scientific theories behind the increased sightings of oarfish:
- Seismic Activity: Some believe these fishes are sensitive to underwater seismic movements and rise to the surface before earthquakes.
- Climate Change: Changes in ocean temperature, pollution, and habitat disruptions may force deep-sea creatures like this fish to come closer to the surface.
- Weakness or Illness: This fish typically die when they reach the shore, suggesting they may be sick or injured before surfacing.
Does Science Support the Myth?
A 2019 study found no direct correlation between oarfish sightings and earthquakes, suggesting that the connection might be coincidental. However, the repeated historical patterns continue to fuel speculation.
