The Origins of Jagannath Rath Yatra

The term “Jagannath” translates to “Lord of the Universe.” Lord Jagannath is consider a form of Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities of Hinduism. The Rath Yatra celebrates the annual journey of Lord Jagannath along with his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, from their abode at the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, which is about 3 kilometers away.

Mythological Beginnings

According to legends, the Rath Yatra symbolizes the journey of Lord Krishna (another form of Vishnu) from his birthplace, Mathura, to Vrindavan, where he spent his childhood. It is believe that the deities travel to their garden palace in the Gundicha Temple, where they stay for a week before returning to their main abode.

One of the most popular stories associate with the Rath Yatra involves Queen Gundicha, the wife of King Indradyumna, who is credit with building the first Jagannath Temple. The queen desired that the deities visit her garden house once a year. To fulfill her wish, the Rath Yatra tradition began, where the deities are taken to her temple on beautifully decorated chariots.

King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, a ruler of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, is said to have established the current temple structure and formalized the Rath Yatra festival.

The Grand Procession

The highlight of the Rath Yatra is the grand procession. Where the deities are place on massive chariots, each resembling a temple structure. These chariots are constructed anew every year and are pulled by thousands of devotees through the streets of Puri. The chariot of Lord Jagannath is known as Nandighosa and has 16 wheels. Lord Balabhadra’s chariot, Taladhwaja, has 14 wheels, and Goddess Subhadra’s chariot, Darpadalana, has 12 wheels. Each chariot is accompanied by a large number of priests, musicians, and devotees who sing hymns and chant prayers, creating an atmosphere of devotion and joy.

The Journey and Return

The journey to the Gundicha Temple is fill with various rituals and ceremonies. Upon reaching the temple, the deities are place inside, and devotees flock to seek their blessings. After a week-long stay, the deities make their return journey to the Jagannath Temple, known as Bahuda Yatra. Which is equally grand and festive.
