Dev Diwali 2024: Timing and Significance

Dev Diwali, also known as Dev Deepawali and Diwali of the Gods, is a festival celebrated with great joy and devotion, mainly in Varanasi and other parts of North India. It marks the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. It falls on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Kartik month, usually 15 days after the main Diwali.  This year, Dev Diwali falls on November 15, 2024.

Why Do We Celebrate Dev Diwali?

Dev Diwali is considered the “Diwali of the Gods.” According to Hindu mythology, the gods celebrate Diwali on this day to honor Lord Shiva’s victory over the evil demon. As per tradition, it is believed that the gods descend to Earth and celebrate this festival on the banks of the Ganga River. Dev Diwali also coincides with Kartik Purnima, the full moon night in the Hindu month of Kartik, making it an auspicious time for Hindus.

Dev Dipawali holds a lot of significance in Hindu tradition. According to mythology:

  1. Victory of Lord Shiva: Dev Diwali marks the day when Lord Shiva defeated the demon Tripurasura, ending his terror. It’s believed that after this victory, gods (devas) rejoiced and celebrated by lighting lamps. Hence, this day is also called “Tripurotsav.”
  2. Special Festival for the Gods: Dev Diwali is considered the day when gods come down to Earth to celebrate and bless their devotees. People light lamps along riverbanks, especially on the Ghats of the Ganges in Varanasi, as a tribute to the gods.
  3. Holy Kartik Purnima: The full moon day of the Kartik month is considered very auspicious. Devotees believe that performing rituals and taking a holy dip in the river Ganga on this day cleanse them of sins.
