The Future of Telegram in India-Will It Be Banned?

The popular messaging app Telegram is currently under investigation by the Indian government. Authorities are looking into whether the app has been misused for illegal activities such as extortion and gambling. This probe could potentially lead to Telegram being banned in India, though no decision has been made yet.

The investigation comes after the arrest of Telegram’s CEO, Pavel Durov, in Paris on August 24, 2024. Durov was reportedly detained because of concerns about how the app is being moderate, particularly its failure to prevent criminal activities. Telegram has denied any wrongdoing, stating that Durov travels frequently and that the platform is committed to protecting user privacy and freedom of speech.

Pavel Durov, often compared to tech giants like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, is a billionaire of Russian origin. He first gained recognition for founding Vkontakte, Russia’s version of Facebook, in 2006. However, he left Russia in 2014 after refusing to share user data with the government. Durov then created Telegram in 2013, aiming to provide a better messaging platform than existing ones like WhatsApp.

Today, Telegram is headquartered in Dubai, and Durov holds citizenship in multiple countries, including France and the United Arab Emirates. The app is widely use around the world, but its future in India is now uncertain, depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation​.

However, as of now, Telegram is not in immediate danger of being banned. Government sources have indicated that Telegram has been compliant with IT rules, which is why it is still allow to operate in the country. Nonetheless, the situation is being closely monitor, and any future decisions will depend on the outcomes of the ongoing investigations​.
